The last full day of the holiday was soon sadly upon us – it would have been nice to have had another couple of days. Luckily, though, the sun shined for us and it turned into a beautiful day, which was fortunate since we had planned to go to St Michael’s Mount.
This time, we got a bus from St Erth station that took us to Marazion. Marazion is a beautiful little village right by the sea walk that takes you over to the Mount. Like the Eden Project, we booked the tickets for the Mount and castle online in advance. We chose to go over on foot when the tide was obviously out. When you book the tickets, it tells you whether the tide is in or out and whether you need to book a boat across or not. It was a lovely walk over there and easy to do in ordinary footwear.
Once arriving on the Mount, we walked up a steep path towards the castle, which is run by the National Trust and home to the Aubyn family. This beautiful tidal island in Mounts Bay has the most magnificent views across the bay from the top of the mount, and you really do need to go here on a lovely sunny day to get the maximum benefit. After exploring around the outside of the castle, we then went inside and toured round the castle rooms and courtyard. It is beautifully kept and is like stepping back in time. We then went around the lovely walled garden, which I could just imagine myself sitting in on a comfortable seat with a drink, pen and paper in hand, and a good book next to me!
We then spent some time sitting on a picnic bench on the hill admiring the scenery with a drink before going back across the walkway to Marazion. The day wouldn’t have been complete without sampling one of Cornwall’s famous pasties from ‘Phelps’ in Marazion. These pasties were like a full meal in pastry and were delicious!
We completed the day by finally going on a long walk by the coast and down some country lanes to get a bus into Hayle for a look round before returning to St Erth on the train. As we set off for our walk, we noticed that the tide was starting to come in around the Mount and the walkway was soon covered in water – there were one or two people actually wading across!
Anyway, it was sadly time to return home the following day, but it had been a great few days in Cornwall and a trip that would be looked back on with plenty of smiles and laughter. Hopefully, I will return soon.
