Just a few steps away from the Buddha is the lovely Po Lin Monastery, which was once just a single thatched hut. The monastery was formed after three Chinese monks visited Lantau Island and fell in love with the beauty and tranquillity of the place. Over the years, the monastery grew and grew and now houses a number of grand buildings and courtyards – including a large pond full of koi carp. This beautifully appointed monastery is colourful, etched in gold, and equally as breathtaking as the Buddha. Lantau Island is a complete contrast to the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and is certainly not to be missed.
