When I looked out of the window the following morning, it was dry and sunny with just a few clouds floating around. So, I hoped for a much better day as far as the weather was concerned. The plan was to get the train to Penzance and walk along by the coast, eventually arriving in Mousehole. We set off and were lucky to get a dry day – hooray!
On arrival in Penzance, we walked to Battery Rocks which is a rocky headland to the south of Penzance harbour. The name is derived from a gun battery that existed here in the 1700s. It was fairly deserted here other than a few brave swimmers, who had to admit that the sea was a little on the cold side! Standing on top of the sea wall at Battery Rocks is the Penzance War Memorial. After taking a few photos, we continued to walk in the direction of the promenade, passing the Jubilee Lido pool on the way. The promenade is quite wide, but it eventually narrows as it leads to a coastal path. The path meanders towards New Lyn, which is a quaint little village with a stream running through it. The village also houses the best ice cream shop in the U.K. called ‘Jelbert’s ‘that is owned by the family of Olympic gold medallist rower, Helen Glover. This ice cream didn’t disappoint and came complete with a chocolate flake and dollop of Cornish cream – what more could you want!
After sitting on the bridge to take a break and eat our ice creams, we continued our walk all the way down the coast, past the harbour and into the pretty fishing village of Mousehole – a great place to get some stunning photos. We also found a beautiful little café here called ‘the Rockpool’ to get some drinks from that was practically on the beach – a beautiful location to sit and relax in.
Eventually, it was time to head back to the centre of Penzance and so, as it would have been a long walk back, we decided to get a bus from the top of the road. We then had a short stroll around the centre of Penzance and down Chapel Street, before ending up at the quaint Mermaid Alley restaurant for a bite to eat. This was a lovely place to eat with extremely good food, and only a short walk back to Penzance station at the end of the evening.
