The following day was spent visiting Ngong Ping, which is in the western part of Lantau Island and home to the Tian Tan Buddha. It was easy to get to via the MTR station, across the road from my hotel, to the nearest point at Tung Chung. I then had to get a bus up to Ngong Ping village, as unfortunately the cable car was not running that day – I was really looking forward to enjoying the views up there, too. The Tian Tan Buddha is a staggering 34 m tall and is only accessible by climbing many steps – this was quite exhausting in the heat of the day, and I consider myself to be in pretty good physical shape! The views from the top are amazing, and I also found a variety of little stalls selling beautiful local jewellery and crafts.
