Honaunau – Kona coffee and a beautiful painted church (Nov 2017)

My first morning in Big Island, after many hours of travel via LA, was a trip to Honaunau on the western coast that is an old fishing community and site of archaeological remains. My first stop was to a lovely café with magnificent views, where I had breakfast and of course had to sample some locally produced Kona coffee. While I was having breakfast, a beautiful gecko suddenly appeared on the windowsill of the open window, and it wasn’t nervous of people at all. After breakfast, I travelled around the coast and stopped off by the sea before embarking on a trip to the amazing St Benedict’s church. This church was truly beautiful and so intricately painted. You can walk around and through the church and take as many photos as you like. As well as being a historical site, the church is still a parish that looks after the local community and even provides medical services.
