This was my last day, as I was due to fly back home in the afternoon. So, I decided, after a busy few day, to take it easy and start the day by heading back into the Old Town to seek out those pretty little souvenir shops I had spotted the previous day. After quite a successful trip, I found a nice little café to relax in before heading back to one of my other favourite spots and quite close to the hotel: the small park next to the National Museum.
After plenty of relaxation, it was soon unfortunately time to return to my hotel to retrieve my case before heading off to the airport. However, before I go, I’d just like to mention a little bit about the local food in Prague. Many of the main courses are a little meat heavy, so obviously not great if you’re a vegan. Schnitzel: pork and chicken are popular and tasty. There are also a lot of different types of dumplings to try – quite different to the ones I am used to in the UK. Goulash is also popular in Prague and made from either beef, pork, or venison. It is quite different to the Hungarian form of goulash I sampled in Budapest. Deep fried cheese in breadcrumbs is another favourite to try.
There are also plenty of delicious cakes, desserts, and ice creams on offer, and you must try Trdelnik, otherwise known as chimney cake. This is a sweet pastry cake that is filled with fruit, ice cream, or both, and delicious. A word of warning, though, they are quite big so make sure you leave plenty of room to sample one! As you walk around the Old Town you will see many open-fronted shops making them right in front of you.
And also, a little note about the metro. I didn’t personally use the metro while I was here, but apparently tickets can be purchased at the machines in the stations and need to be validated before the beginning of your travel. There are three lines A (Green) B (Yellow) and C (Red). Services run every few minutes between 4am and midnight each day. The lines serve all areas of the city and the suburbs.
