Lake Louise was our next base for a few days. Lake Louise is a 70-ft deep glacial lake and a hamlet in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake is a truly beautiful experience and, in my opinion, even more stunning when covered in snow like it was on our visit. The water is a beautiful turquoise colour and is made even more attractive by the backdrop of the mountains and the chateau in the distance. It was obviously extremely cold, and we had to wrap up well with hats, scarfs, gloves, and boots – although I did actually see a couple of brave people wearing shorts! We made the most of all the photo opportunities and then had a long walk around the lake so that we could see it from all angles. There are also canoes on the lake that you can go out on, but I didn’t fancy that in those temperatures in case I capsized – the water only reaches about 10°C in the summer! Apparently, you can even skate on the lake during the depths of winter when it is completely frozen.
Our next view of the lake was from a more elevated angle as we went over to the Lake Louise ski resort and up into the mountains in a gondola. The views up there were magnificent, so we were so pleased that we had been able to do this trip as well. Ever since our arrival in the Rockies, we were determined to spot some bears and hoped that we may see some from up here – sadly, though, we didn’t see any. Once at the top, there was a beautiful restaurant with a balcony outside that had breathtaking views. It was definitely time for us to get something to eat and some hot drinks to warm us up before going back down!
