Our first day in Camps Bay was perfect: the sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in sight. So, we decided to embark on a trip up Table Mountain to enjoy the views.
Queues formed quickly for the cableway and finding a parking space was more difficult than we had imagined, despite an early departure. Fortunately, though, as the cable cars take up to 65 passengers at a time, the queue reduced quite quickly. The cable cars are spacious with revolving floors that enable you to have 360° views. If you don’t fancy the cable car, then you can walk or even abseil!
Table Mountain is one of the oldest mountains in the world and consists of layers of sandstone and granite that were formed by glacial action 520 million years ago. Once at the top, we were met by stunning views, and you can see right across Cape Town and out to Robben Island. There is quite a large area to walk around at the top, and a variety of walks are offered where you can see some of South Africa’s amazing flora and fauna. If you’re lucky, you may even see a Dassie; which is a plump and tail-less African rodent that lives up in the mountains. We unfortunately didn’t see one, but we did find a rather beautiful lizard that wasn’t in the least bit timid and was happy to have its photograph taken!
